  8. 8. Records & References: Forms and logs to complete, retention periods, and links to related documents — control plans, FMEAs, work instructions, drawings, and regulatory standards.

Key elements of an effective manufacturing SOP

  • Process steps written as actions: Each step begins with a verb (charge, heat, assemble, verify) and states a measurable target with tolerance, not a vague instruction like "heat until ready."
  • Quality controls at the right points: In-process checks are embedded at the step where they add value, with explicit pass/fail criteria and the action to take on failure.
  • Safety procedures: Lockout/tagout, PPE, chemical handling, emergency stops, and ergonomic notes appear inline at the step where the hazard exists — not buried in an appendix.
